I have been getting my fill of Leo and the gang from all the netcasts on Leo's network. I have to say the one I enjoy the most is the daily gadget thing with Dick DeBartolow. Man, I LOL several times a show, what chemestry!
Anyway, I joined tribe because of CFH when Cat Scwartz told us about it. Glad to be here.

When I started this tribe, it was as a result of Call for Help talking about Tribe-net and starting the Techtv Techies group. One of the people I would watch Techtv for was James Kim, one of the on-air geeks. Like many of you, I followed the situation in Oregon with much interest this past week and am truly saddened to hear of his loss to not only CNET but the rest of the geek world.

Hello everyone. Brand new to this tribe but love TechTV. I especially love Leo's show on KFI, wish it was available on satellite radio.

Anyways, here's my question... Can someone recommend to me a program (preferrably freeware) that will allow me to remove registry entries that load spyware programs, adware programs, or deleted programs?

I don't want to go around messing with the registry unassisted and foul things up.

Thank you.

Pentium M question for notebooks

I'm looking to purchase an all-around notebook. I will be using it for some audio recording and editing, but it will only be as much as 2 tracks at a time, 4 max. (Nothing too hefty, but will needs some processing power).

Most of the laptops out today use the Pentium M processor from Intel. Have any of you experimented with these processors and have you have any problems with it? The clock speed is decent, and memory won't be a problem. Any experince with these processors? Are they good? What would they be equivilant to?

Notebooks with the P4 processor tend to be too $$ and can weigh more, and I want to keep this portable and within reason. Notebooks w/ AMD processors are usually HP or Compaq and I'd rather not go that route. But, Compaq seems to be the best bang for the buck out there.

thanks!

Early last year I got hit by a nasty and old bit of spyware, new.net. I finally got rid of it, but haven't been able to fully repair my winsoc. It'll work for awhile, then suddenly not recognize any site or have any connection unless I shut my browser for a few minutes.

LSPfix won't work, neither will a VB repair program. Can anyone help me with another solution?

I think its a virus at work..i turn on my computer and i see "port magic corrupt" Port magic is a file that it is automatically installed when AOL is installed. So i talk to AOL and they tell me how to reinstall it. Meanwhile my Norton antivirus disables itself and says an internal error please reinstall. So i unstalled the two and reinstalled. Result..same crap. I have no virus scanner and i get the same messages..oh i tried to get an online virus scan from the site but seeing "downloading active x controls" was getting on my nerve ecause i didnt know whehter it froze or if it was downloading at all. Could someone give me some help with this..i dont want to wipe out windows..again

Gang, I created this while watching Cat and Leo on Call for Help and since the programs we know and love are pretty much dead and relocated/changed so much we no longer recognize them, I'm wondering whether we might kill off the Techtv Techies group. If there's someone else who wants to mod this tribe, I'd be willing to give up the post. PM me and I'll see about making it happen.

Thanks for all your posts and adoration.

Can i tunnel AOL onto another PC?

Both PC's are using 2Kpro SP4. Both are connected to a LAN network. I am using AOL to access the net and would like to know if i can use a tunnel or VPN to my other computer? If possible would i need to install AOL again to my other PC or can i just bring up an explorer window to access the net?

Please explain how i can accomplish this?

Thank you,

ok, i need some help from the techies of tech tv.

my brother bought a laptop this weekend and it has wireless 802.11g and we have a wireless g and wired router.

we have 3 computers on a wired network right now for file-sharing and the like, but it wont let my brother get onto the workgroup and share files. it connects to the router and gets a 54 meg connection but you cant do anything with it. (we have dial-up so the network isnt used for internet) but if you plug it into the network with an ethernet cable you can get to everything just fine.

is this some sort of security thing? and if so is there a way i can get around it?

thanks in advance.

Well I've given them a few weeks to see how the new format would be and it's not good. On a 1 to 10 I give them a 3 on a good day. Alex talks to much, please take his caffine and sugar away, and there is less tech and to much fluff. But I think the worst is that they only take 2 live calls a show, that just sux big time, especially considering the crap they are showing. I think Yoshi is pretty cool, but the mods he's been coming up with are very weak and I'm not taking anything from Yoshi it's just that modding is not something that can be done as often as they want hime to do. How about giving some of that time back to live calls, and the 3 minutes of wasted time at the beginning with the "virtual hockey" league, jeesh who approved this garbage.

Oh well, just my thoughts. I knew there wasn't much hope when G4 bought them out, but I was hoping that they would at least keep TSS the same since they ruined the rest of the network.

i think the old set looked MUCH better... this new co-host, Alex seems more like a comedian then a techie... we'll have to wait and see if he actually talks the tech or just cracks jokes while kevin answers questions... and the content yesterday just felt different...

i'll still watch but, i think my main tech info source now is kevinrose.com

If at all possible, try and include real-life pros & cons of using the program(s) such as, whether there's any spyware, pop-ups, difficulty in setup, platform compatability issues etc. & so forth...

SO, about 5 months ago, I did a show with TechTv called GeekChic. Now, this was right before the big LA move, so the producer left for greener pastures. I got my video copies, but I never saw if the show aired.

PC Will Not Turn On. Chassis Panel Problem?

I finally got all the cards and everything assembled to my new Asus K8-N Deluxe motherboard. The thing is, when I try to turn it on it will not start. This problem I attribute to the connections on the chassis panel, but I could be wrong.

The manual says it's "foolproof" and color coded. Which seems good but after a while the colors stop making sense to me.

Can anyone help me out? Any suggestions to why the computer will not start?

Need Advice for New Rig

I knew that Doom3 would raise the PC standards quite a bit.

I need some advice on a rig that will last me for a while. Any input is greatly appreciated. This is what I plan on using to create my new computer:

-AMD Athlon XP 2800 Barton Core

-Abit NF7-5 nForce2 Motherboard

or

-Gigabyte GA-7N400Pro2 nForce2 Ultra Motherboard

or

-Asus A7N8X E-Deluxe nForce2

Now, there's a choice between videocards and I have a question about.

There's the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB that sells for $249.99. Then there's the Sapphire Radeon 9600 256MB. Would a lower model containing more video ram outperform a higher model with a lower amount of video ram? Is the difference neglible?

I am looking to build a rig that would handle future games that would come out for the next two years at least. Any help would be appreciated.

I got to wait on a MS employee today at work... it was SOOOOOOOOO hard not to just lay into him but... i did have a little fun with him...

we started talking and he asked me about how Half-Life 2 got leaked out on the net so i said "yea, a hacker broke into Valve software's server through a hole in Outlook" and his response was "that's not our fault"...

then, i asked "Tech TV has bashed MS a lot over the years, does MS have an official opinion of them" and he's response was "we at MS don't have opinions, we have lawyers"...

then he proceeded to tell me how he's a bug tester and has found 4,000 bugs in his four years at MS, he made it sound like an achievement...

other little things were i finally found out that XP is short for "experience" and "longhorn" is a codename as "whistler" was XP's code name before it was released...

plus he told me that Service Packet 2 shipped today so it should be up for download within a week... he told me a little about how gamers will hate it because it messes with your ports and finally turns on the Windows firewall by default...

in the end, i got a 10% tip from the guy... after he showed off his "windows server 2003" wristwatch that was a gift from Bill to the team...

What G4TechTV Should Do

What G4TechTV should do is instead of cancelling most of the old Tech TV shows, I think they should atleast try to use some of them, I noticed awhile back, they took off Tech Live, from what ive seen, they have there own news program based around gaming, now while i feel this is alright good, but what they should do is take Pulse & Tech Live and make a new news program that combines aspects of the two of them, what they good do is base it off a local news program, local news has News, Weather, and Sports, what G4TechTV should do is follow that example but make it Tech News (Tech Live), Gaming News (Pulse), and New Gagets (Fresh Gear), I would love to hear everyone elses opinion on this.

I can't even watch the only reason I have extended cable channels anymore, all because of the evilness that is G4.

Well, except for X-Play/Screensavers. Then I can stand it...

I don't know which I hate more, the silly commercials or the lame G4 shows...or the website, my god, the website!

I feel like I am watching MTV, not TechTV.....ARGH!!

We need to stage a takeover of the studio, so the good TechTV stuff can get the love it deserves!

...sorry, had to babble about it somewhere and I was driving my boyfriend insane with it. :p

Hey All,
Yesterday I had the best fun one can have, I reformatted: woo hoo! I know thats a blast, luckily we were functional pretty quick thanks to my days of planning and backing up.

Anyway, after I reformatted and reinstalled both Netscape and Mozilla I noticed that tribe wasn't remembering me when come to the site. Netscape does remember my email address and password, but I always have to sign in everytime I come in. It only started doing this after, I started over.

Is there a problem with my browsers or is the problem with tribe? (which I doubt) It isn't a major deal just a nagging annoyance.

Any help would be appericated. Thanks.

I'm trying to figure out what the "G4" in G4 stands for. Right now I'm thinking it's a rating of 4 out of 5 as in,
"Crikee, that network doesn't just suck, it blows goats!"
"How bad?" "
"I'd give it 4 out of 5."
And hence the name G4. Any other ideas?

Leo On KFI

Even though Leo will be back on CallForHelp on TechTV Canada, he isn't on our lives very much anymore. So why not check him out on the weekends when he does his Radio Show? I just started this weekend, and I have downloaded all his archives and am slowly catching up.

But what about everyone else? Have you been listening to Leo on the weekends? His show airs 12:00 PM to 3:00PM PST, Sat and Sunday. Thats 3:00PM to 6:00PM EST. If you don't live in the KFI area, like me then you can listen to Leo on the web.

Check him out at: http://www.kfi640.com/interactive/streaming.html

And if you wanna chat during the show, check out this info:

Server: irc.dslextreme.com
Port: 6667
Channel: #kfi (at least that's where I'll be - there are other channels if you want to mingle, but it's our own dedicated server).

If you don't have an IRC chat program, check out XChat, I use it and it's easy and stable: http://www.xchat.org

Leo's Back on TV!

Well well-if you haven't seen leo's blog < http://leo.typepad.com/ >, then you're missing the big news: Leo's got a full time Call For Help style show again! That's the good news. The Bad News is that it's only going to be available on TechTV Canada. Here's the link to the post:

He noted in an email he sent to the long_live_techtv yahoogroup that they'll be trying to sell the show back to a network in the United States, and of course G4 gets first crack because they own 30% of TechTV Canada. Here's the message he sent:

---
It's my hope that we'll be able to sell the show back into the US. We
were unable to find a cable outlet in the States who wanted to produce
the show, but if it's produced for them and offered at a fraction of the
cost I think we could definitely find a taker. G4 would get first dibs,
of course. They own 30% of TechTV Canada.

Wouldn't that be the ultimate irony if G4 cancelled Call for Help, then
bought it back from TechTV Canada? Of course they'd save hundreds of
thousands of dollars by doing so. We'll also be tying to sell it back
into other International markets. I'm hoping we can restore CFH to its
former glory by the end of the year.

I think you'll really like my new co-hosts. Andy Walker will be the Roger
Chang of the show, and Jelena Mihajlovic will be the new Cat. Both of
them have excellent tech and TV chops, and they're already coming up with
some great ideas for bits for the show. I had hoped to bring some old
TechTV folks up with me, but Canadian content restrictions make it
impossible. I do hope I can get them to contribute from time to time,
though. The new sets look swell - much nicer than we've ever had before.
The studio is much cozier, but that's ok.

The current plan is to tape 15 shows in four days (yikes) starting in
July. We hope to get this on the air by August. I am also lobbying to get
them to restore the CFH web site - G4 has to say it's ok first. That's an
expensive proposition, but they understand how important the web site is
to the show. At the very least, we'll have a great site going forward,
but I'd love to get all the old content back, too.

I feel like we've found a great home for my baby - these people really
understand the show. They always aired it in prime time in Canada, and I
believe they'll give it its due. I know I'm looking at a serious grind,
but it's worth it. And I promise that job #1 is to get it sold back to a
US channel.

Leo
------

Best of luck to him!

What makes Tribe a success?

Hey all,
I am going to write an ebook about tribe (indirectly), so I need to do a bit of research. I am wondering if you guys would help me out and answer these questions about Tribe. . . They are all your opinion, and I won't mock or dispute them in any way.

Okay here they are:

First, what brought you to Tribe?

Second, what you want in a Tribe?

Third, why do you use Tribe?

Finally, do you have any cool stories about Tribe that you feel comfortable telling?

------------------

For anyone answering, I thank you and I assure you that I have no connection to Tribe. I only want to get a gist of what others think and feel about Tribe to help me write the book easier. Thank you.

New G4techtv Website SUCKS!!!!!!

Tonight I visited the techtv website which I have come to know and love. Instead of seeing my beloved website I am presented with this disgusting, pathetic excuse of what they are calling G4techtv. What the hell happened where are my easy navigational buttons, where are all the cool free files they have shown and provided for us all these years on the screensavers page? Where are all of the other pages that had great information along with some footage from that show? Does anyone even give a shit about the G4 videogame shows, or any of there new shows? We have X-Play with Adam and Morgan and that was plenty good enough for me. Everything is all messed up, and the world has proved once again, this is a shitty place to live in. Any thoughts?

david pogue column about the demise of techtv.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/03/technology/circuits/03POGUE-EMAIL.html

June 3, 2004
FROM THE DESK OF DAVID POGUE
A Lamentation for TechTV

It’s a fact of high-tech life: things move fast. Don’t fall too much in love with anything, because it might not be here this time next year.

Like Sony’s innovative Clié palmtops, which Sony announced this week that it will no longer sell in the U.S.

Or like TechTV, a cable station dedicated to technology lovers. For years, I’ve regularly TiVo’ed several of its shows—especially “The Screen Savers,” “Call for Help” and “TechLive”—and then, by fast-forwarding, cherry-picked the best tips, tricks, news, trends, and Web links. I learned something new every time.

Last Friday, TechTV as we know it disappeared. It was swallowed up by Comcast, the cable-TV giant, who has merged TechTV with its own G4 channel (all video games, all the time).

The new, combined channel, called G4TechTV, will include some of TechTV’s shows in a new form. But several shows have been canceled, including “Call for Help” and “Tech Live,” and the hosts of the remaining shows may be replaced. The timing couldn’t be worse. After struggling for years to get into the channel lineups of the nation’s cable and satellite providers, TechTV was finally making some headway and building a following. (The Times wrote about “Call for Help” as recently as December, in a story about its live, 24-hour “Help-a-Thon.”)

But for whatever reason, Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Paul Allen, whose Vulcan Programming company owned TechTV, put the channel up for sale. (Insert joke about Paul Allen needing the cash here.)

Comcast is trying to put a bright spin on things, proclaiming “G4techTV will be the one and only network that is plugged into every dimension of games, gear, gadgets & gigabytes.”

But behind the press release, you’ll find a lot of very unhappy people. For starters, there are the 285 TechTV staffers whose jobs are being eliminated.

Then there are “The Screen Savers” (TSS) fans, who already miss original host Leo Laporte since his departure a couple of months ago, and may soon see the departure of his co-host, Patrick Norton. (A G4TechTV spokesman says only that the new channel is “in negotiations with several TechTV hosts.”)

One laid-off employee told me that in pursuit of the young male demographic, Comcast has an incentive to replace these veteran computer-industry personalities with twentysomethings.

If that’s true, I worry that we won’t be seeing any more of TSS’s trademark interviews with brilliant—but over-30—industry pioneers like Jef Raskin, Robert Moog, Don Norman and Douglas Engelbart.

In fact, you have to wonder what interviews and cutting-edge demos they’ll offer at all, since Comcast is moving what’s left of TechTV from San Francisco (high-tech country) to L.A. (video-game country).

Then there’s the new Web site, G4TechTV.com, which is a blinking, pulsing organizational disaster. Its chaos doesn’t say much for the show’s new guardians, although the G4TechTV spokesman reminded me that the two channels merged only last Friday, on a holiday weekend. He assured me that the Web site will constantly improve.

The real tragedy is that a merged gamer-PC channel might not be any more likely to succeed than two separate channels did; in fact, you might argue that the combined channel will disappoint both constituencies equally. As one disappointed fan wrote on G4’s feedback board: “They think they can attract a larger, younger demographic by just putting on younger faces. These people, however, will not feel the pinch until the ratings plummet down the road. It happened where I worked before.

“These fools would let an aging Robin Williams go to bring in Carrot Top. We can only hope that these short-sighted morons realize the errors of their ways and bring back Leo Laporte before the ratings take a nose-dive to the point where they decide to cancel G4/TechTV altogether.”

In fact, G4TechTV is indeed in negotiations with Mr. Laporte about an increased role at the new network. Meanwhile, G4TechTV exhorts viewers to give the new channel a try, send feedback at its Web site, and be patient; the merged network will “constantly improve” over the next 12 months.

That may be so—but in the short term, at least, I’ll miss my old on-screen friends at TechTV.
TechTV Techies New Meeting Place

Many of us dedicated TechTV Die-Hards joined together and created a new community over at Yahoo! Groups called "Long Live TechTV". Over 300 people joined in a matter of a few days (most of them since Friday the 28th). We are archiving anything and everything we could salvage from the site before it was shut down. We got the links, pics, themes, videos, and eventually, links to all the free files ACTUAL websites (the sites that were linked off the techtv.com pages).

We have EVERYTHING activated: chat room, file-sharing, calendar, link exchange, photo galleries, etc. Links to all the TechTV cast and crew's sites, blogs, moblogs, forums, etc. can be accessed from inside the group. With hundreds migrating there already in only the last few days, we're all becoming quite aware that this is our NEW meeting place on the Web. I personally WELCOME all my fellow "TechTV Techies" Tribe members to come and join us. You'll have to have a Yahoo ID. If you don't already have a Yahoo membership, it's free to join. EVERYTHING in the group is FREE, and we are sharing with one another anything and everything we could salvage from the Mother Ship. If you're wondering where you go - now that TechTV.com is officially shut-down - this is the place! The link is below. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Didn't i hear Leo say something about a Norton tool that was an uninstaller but had the option to seek out all parts of a program and recompress them into an EXE...?... Anyone remember what that was...?

Or if any one else has any ideas, that would be appreciated... thanks...

With TechTV's end nearing it is time to stop the fighting and complaining and begin the tribute to a great network that has brought so many people together. In honor of the years that I and so many different people in so many countries have spent glued to TechTV, using it to broaden their horzions; I have written this short poem.

I wrote it Friday night when I couldn't sleep (mostly unrelated to TechTV,) but sadly I couldn't get it out until today.

So recently I’ve been thinking about getting a LCD display and have noticed something.

It seems to me that a large number of manufacturers are limiting the new LCDs to a 24-bit color depth.

What purpose does this serve and at what cost to image quality?

Cars for Driving the Internet

OSI
This sleek black car has obviously been long years in the design process - almost everything has been thought of, down to the last detail. Unfortunately, it is 500 metres long, weighs 300 tons, and has no accelerator pedal. It takes a long time to get going, but once it reaches its top speed (15 mph), it takes a lot to stop it. A gentle hill will usually do the trick...

TCP/IP
This hillbilly pickup truck has the most crazy assortment of add ons you can possibly imagine, but underneath there is a deceptively simple, rust-free chassis. You can also hear the purr of an obviously turbo-charged V12 engine underneath the clutter, but it's getting harder to find. It'll do 0-60 in 4 seconds, but it has no brakes. Brakes? Who needs brakes? Just jam a crowbar in the axle and lock the wheels...

WWW
This is a huge freeway system, with roads crossing roads all over the place. Exits flash past at bewildering speed, and before long you can think you're lost beyond hope of ever being found. However, if you know where you want to go, you're okay, since you can guarantee that there will be at least a dozen ways to get there. Unfortunately, they're all off that road underneath you. So you just have to work out how to get there...

Mosaic
This is a huge tour bus, the very latest air conditioned, luxury model. It'll take you wherever you want to go, as long as there is a 5-lane freeway right to the doorstep, otherwise get off and walk (it's quicker). Oh, and the highway is jammed with hundreds of other buses full of Japanese tourists busy taking photos and writing articles about the anarchic freedom of the highways, whilst sitting in a huge traffic jam waiting to get into Gracelands.

ftp
This is a sleek bare-bones sports car with an ultra aerodynamic body. It will take you where you want to go in the blink of a second and you can fill the boot with as much stuff as you want. However, there is no windscreen, 184 gears, and you have to type in a 12 digit number from memory to tell it where to go.

telnet
This is a reliable old family saloon car. It never breaks down, can fit down any road, no matter how small and twisty, and performs well no matter what the road conditions. However, it goes at the same speed on a 6 lane autobahn as on a dirt track, and it steers like a 12 ton truck.

X Windows
This is a flashy red convertible, with electric windows, doors, sunroof etc. Inside, you can alter the position of the steering wheel, the layout of all the controls and instruments, the sound of the horn, and the colour of any of the fittings. It is the ultimate accessory for the power user, and gives you many happy years of pleasure. It is only when you get out of the car that you realise that you never left the drive.

Windows 95
This car is in such great demand that your order cannot be delivered until next year. However, when you do get it, it looks great, a big improvement over the Windows 3 model, and it boasts a big "Highway Ready" sticker in the back window, which means you finally get to leave the car park. You get inside, and press the big red "Go InfoBahn" button on the dashboard. You wait for the g force. Nothing happens for 10 minutes, then the square wheels fall off.

well Leo states in his "Laporte Report" that the show is being shopped around. http://leo.typepad.com/tlr/2004/05/last_call.html#0001447626

How about we help it along and keep Leo on the air!!!!!
heres the contact page for TLC (part of the discovery networks)

http://extweb.discovery.com/viewerrelations

Anyone got any other ideas as to where CFH would fit in?

We know by now about the TechTV staff being given their pink slips, and even though Online petitions tend to do little or nothing, this is something we can do.

Additionally, there's a direct link in the Slashdot article to Comcast's complaint bucket so perhaps they might listen to the flood of complaints due to come through:

Thanks for the Leo Friends & TechTV Tribes!

I just watched Cat on Call for Help this morning, and she was talking about online meeting places. She said that we should cruise over here and hook up with other TechTV groupies (not her exact wording, of course). I headed directly over here, typed in the site-search box "TechTV" and got "Leo's Friends" and "TechTV Techies" tribes -- I joined them both.

Apparently, both groups were created by you, Bruce, and I just wanted to say THANKS! I can't even come close to expressing in mere words how much I love those folks at Screen Savers and Call for Help. Leo Laporte has lots of fans, I know, but if the truth be known, I'm his No.#1 FAN! LoL I've got his books, watch his shows (and yes, even the re-runs), visit his site www.leoville.com/ often, and my favorite web site of all time is http://www.techtv.com/techtv/index.html/ !!

Anyway, thanks again, and if you talk to Cat, tell her Mark - aka MrWebAuthor - said, "THANKIES Cat for the Tip about the Tribe.net!"

Hey is it just me, or does anyone else experience problems when trying to goto to the websites of callfor help and the screensavers. Whenever I goto the websitem all I get is the techtv logo at the very top of the page, and the rest is blank. And this is the only site that it does this on. I tried changin my resolution, pressing (F5) to refresh, and nothing gives. Does anyone else have this problem.

What stays and what goes

Okay, official "my show is leaving and that crap is staying?!" thread here.

Allow me to begin. I'm pissed as all hell that TechLive is going. I mean, I actually relied on them as a source for tech news and information, and I'm sorely dissapointed that they're going. I suppose it's part of G4's attempt to pander to the 13-year-old-counterstrike-playing demographic. At the same time, I don't believe they're going to continue airing reruns of Robot Wars(as much as I find the series amusing, it was cancelled in the UK YEARS AGO. They're aired wars 1-6 over and over for months now) and I really don't believe Martin Sargent gets to keep his job but Jessica Corbin loses hers. Blah.

I'm also peeved(although not as much) that CFH is going by the wayside too. Although I had thought it had been going downhill lately, I'm still sad to see it go in favor of some of the crap G4 is putting up.

Anyone else?
